Tom of Finland

A Return to Culture | Frieze Week

NeueHouse-Tom-of-Finland-Talk

With Frieze Week in full swing, NeueHouse and Fotografiska hosted "The Official Life and Work of a Gay Hero,” a panel discussion on the life and works of Tom of Finland.

The talk was a chance to hear more of the story behind the recently opened exhibition of the artist’s source photography, The Darkroom, now on view at Fotografiska.

The followers and admirers of Tom of Finland are diverse, dedicated, and close-knit, a testament to the message and impact of this groundbreaking artist, whose following continues to grow as his message reaches new audiences. A particular treat for the assembled crowd was hearing from Durk Dehner, Tom of Finland’s partner, muse, and founder of the Tom of Finland Foundation. Alongside Dehner were the artist (and Tom’s friend) Nayland Blake, author F. Valentine Hooven III, Foundation Vice President & Curator Sharp, and publisher Rodolphe LaChat. Hearing firsthand from this group, it’s clear that, while Tom of Finland has passed, his spirit remains alive and well in the powerful body of work he left behind.
